DJ Ortiz is coaching Cole Glasson at New Castle Motorsports Park this weekend where they are attending the opening event of the 2010 WSK North American Series by CKI.
Live broadcast of the event starts on Saturday April 10th and can be viewed on the CKI website by clicking HERE. Archived videos of 2009 CKI Florida Cup races can also be viewed. Be sure to tune in Saturday and Sunday to watch Cole race!
We arrived at New Castle Indiana on Wednesday evening. Thursday was
a set
up day for all drivers, CKI closed the track on Thursday to prevent anyone
from gaining
an advantage immediately prior to the race. With temperatures in the
high 30's
it was miserable at times but tolerable. Friday morning began with low
temperatures as well. The track was surprisingly fast, allowing drivers
to
promptly put fast lap time on their Mychrons. Cole Glasson (KRS)
driver running under the DFR tent was mid pack during practice. After a
some
chassis and engine tuning adjustment by long time coach and tuner DJ
Ortiz,
Cole was able to climb to the top 5. During the last 2 practices Cole
was 2nd
and 5th fastest. Saturday morning began with a warmer day in the high
40's.
First and only practice on Saturday, Cole was looking pretty fast but
not
as fast as some of the other top competitors. Cole and I talked about
the
chassis, engine, and track conditions. Cole was able to give me a great
driver
debrief allowing us to communicate effectively to improve the
kart. The
debrief and the adjustments were right on the money. Cole posted the
fastest lap
on the 4th lap never able to be matched by the rest of the competition.
Congratulations to Cole for taking the pole for Saturday's
race!
On the start of the pre-final the kids were overly aggressive
having
to go around a few times. Finally they took the green. Cole lost a few
positions
by turn 4. Allowing the competitors to battle for position up in the
front.
Cole battled his way to the 3rd spot but aggressive
driving by a competitor put him into the fence on the last turn. The
competitor
was penalized and put in the back of the field behind Cole. Cole battle
his way
from the back to 3rd, taking a podium finish. Great driving Cole!
Sunday was quite a bit warmer. Chassis and engine tuning had to be
changed
almost every hour. Cole was fast during practice, and qualifying taking the 5th
spot on
the grid. Others competitors found a few more tenths allowing his
competition to
start up front. We took 5th on qualifying, pre-final and final. "It was a
great
weekend for us." says DJ Ortiz. "We were able to compete well and put down some
fast times. We will return to New Castle in June to compete in the Pan
American Challenge Series."
See you at the track.
