2008 Rock Island Grand Prix January Newsletter
The Rock Island Grand Prix is excited to make some early-season announcements regarding some significant changes in the class structure and rules for this year’s event, August 30-31, in Rock Island, Illinois.
Please click on the tabs below to read more...
The 2008 Rock Island Grand Prix will feature a TAG SuperPro class, which is open to top drivers by invitation only. Drivers who compete in this class will not be eligible to compete in TAG Senior, which should make that class more competitive and take some pressure off the waiting list. We have also added a TAG Heavy class which will run at the same weight as TAG Masters.
Also new this year is 125cc Stock Moto gearbox class. The former Yamaha Heavy class will now be called 2-cycle Pipe Heavy. HPV-4 will be allowed and run at the same weight as Yamaha, and HPV-3 will be allowed with a weight break. A rolling start will be used. The Yamaha Medium class will not be offered. Other classes dropped from the program this year are Intercontinental A, 4-cycle Raptor and 125cc Masters (who can run with the 125 moto). Look for more announcements about this year’s Rock Island Grand Prix at Kart Expo International presented by Sodi Kart, Feb. 23-24, in suburban Chicago. Please plan now to visit this great kart racing trade show and stop by our booth. For more information on Kart Expo International presented by Sodi Kart, visit www.e-kmi.com or go to www.rockislandgrandprix.com/news and click on Kart Expo International link. Several rules changes have been approved for 2008.
-
Full body work will only be allowed in the 4-cycle classes.
- All 2-cycle classes must use CIK homologated bodywork.
- Numbers will now be a pre-tech item. Specifically, numbers must be at least five inches tall and cannot have shadows or shading. Front 4-cycle numbers cannot wrap over the top of the fenders. Rear number panels must be anchored so they do not “sail.”
- Any competitor caught cutting fence to leave early without official prior approval will be banned from the Rock Island Grand Prix in the future.
We have had a number of inquiries and have been told by Marty Casey, TAG International Tech Director, that the Rok TT motor is under review. As has been our practice in the past, we will run TAG International rules as they stand on August 1. A “bounty” is being paid for new competitors. Any driver who brings another racer with them who has not competed at Rock Island before, will get $10 off their registration to be paid at check-in. This year we have purged our mailing list. Anyone who has NOT competed at the Rock Island Grand Prix the past four years will not receive registration information. If you have NOT competed here and would like to be on the mailing list, please email

with your mailing information. This email distribution list will not be affected by the purge. We are happy to welcome AT&T and Mazda back as Presenting Sponsors for 2008, as well as most of our 2007 sponsors. Other sponsorship opportunities are available. Please call or email and we will be happy to put together a package to meet your specific marketing needs.
